OctoPress

बिबरन

Meet Octo, the AI colleague that lives in your WordPress admin.

Ask in plain language. Octo reads your posts, pages, and site settings, drafts new content with real Gutenberg blocks, and answers questions about how your site is set up. When it wants to change something, it shows you exactly what will change and waits for your approval.

You bring the AI. Sign in with your ChatGPT or Grok account, or paste an API key for Anthropic (API only), OpenAI, xAI, DeepSeek, OpenRouter, OpenCode Go, or Z.AI. Any OpenAI-compatible endpoint works too. There is no middleman, no AI credits to buy from us, and no lock-in: switch provider or model from the chat box at any time.

What you can ask Octo

  • “Review my last ten posts and tell me which titles are weak.” Octo reads your posts and replies with a short, specific list.
  • “Draft a Summer Hours page for the café, saved as a draft.” Octo builds it from core Gutenberg blocks, validates the markup, and gives you edit and preview links.
  • “Rewrite the title of my ‘New roast!!!’ post and add an excerpt.” Octo shows the tool it wants to run and the fields it will change, then waits for you to approve.
  • “Give me an overview of this site.” Active theme, plugins, content types, and environment, in one answer.
  • “Search my site for everything we’ve published about cold brew.” Find and compare content without opening twenty tabs.

Starter prompts on a new chat adapt to the tools you have enabled, so there is always a sensible place to begin.

You stay in control

  • Approvals before changes. Content updates and other write actions pause for your review. You see the tool, the target, and the changed fields before anything runs.
  • Questions, not guesses. When Octo needs a decision, it asks with clear options and an optional free-form answer.
  • Tools you choose. Turn individual tools on or off and set the minimum WordPress role allowed to run each one.
  • Per-chat permissions. Approve all, approve selected tools, or require approval every time, separately for each chat.
  • Drafts first. Content-writing workflows are built around drafts and explicit, approved updates.

Understand your AI usage

Click the context ring in the composer to see how much of the model’s window the chat uses, plus input, output, reasoning, cache-read, and cache-write tokens for the last request and for the whole chat. This is token usage, not a bill: pricing, subscription limits, and what counts as cached are set by your provider. For Anthropic, OctoPress adds prompt-cache breakpoints automatically, which can reduce the cost of repeated input in long chats.

Works the way you do

  • Saved chats and private Projects. Keep related conversations together with reusable instructions. Chats are stored in your WordPress database, not on a third-party service.
  • Focused agents. Use Octo for everyday admin work or Content Writer for drafting. Edit prompts, tools, skills, and handoff behavior, or create your own agents and pick the default for new chats.
  • Images in chat. Attach PNG, JPEG, WebP, or GIF images when the selected model accepts them, reuse them in later messages, and save selected images to the Media Library.
  • Retry failed turns. If a provider errors or times out, retry with your current provider, model, and agent without duplicating your message.
  • Make it yours. Light, dark, or follow-your-system mode, plus accent color, corner style, spacing, and font. Preferences are personal to your account and never change your site’s theme.
  • Phone friendly. The chat workspace is compact and responsive on small screens.

Great for

  • Site owners and small teams who want a capable assistant in wp-admin without learning prompt engineering.
  • Editors and content teams auditing titles and excerpts, drafting pages, and keeping a consistent voice.
  • Agencies and freelancers who want one AI workspace they can connect to the client’s own provider account.

How it works

OctoPress runs inside WordPress admin. Connect a provider, sync its models, enable the ones you want, and start chatting. The guided first-run setup walks through it in about a minute.

When Octo needs information from WordPress, OctoPress provides safe site context such as posts, pages, public post types, plugins, themes, blocks, patterns, theme design settings, and available WordPress abilities. When Octo wants to change content, OctoPress applies enabled tools, permission checks, and your approval.

OctoPress does not include an AI model. Responses come from the provider you choose.

What is included

  • Guided first-run setup, a saved chat workspace, starter prompts, and Projects.
  • Connect your own AI provider. The full list is in the FAQ below.
  • Agent profiles, skills, and an editable system prompt.
  • Native question, plan review, handoff, and approval flows.
  • Content tools for inspecting and drafting WordPress content and applying approved updates.
  • WooCommerce abilities exposed as tools when WooCommerce provides them.
  • Usage details and personal Appearance settings.
  • Diagnostics for blocked background requests and hosting timeouts, including WordPress Site Health checks.
  • Extension support for adding tools, skills, agents, and starter prompts.

Your data and credentials

OctoPress stores its settings, provider configuration, encrypted provider secrets, chats, messages, runs, agents, tools, skills, and extension settings in your WordPress database.

API keys and OAuth credentials are stored server-side and are not returned to browser users through normal OctoPress REST responses.

Hosting requirements

OctoPress requires PHP 8.1 or newer. For long chats to continue reliably, your host must allow normal WordPress loopback requests to the same site. The free plugin does not require PHP CLI access, shell access, or server process execution.

Some hosts block loopback requests or disable WP-Cron. In those environments OctoPress can activate, but long-running chats may not continue reliably until loopback requests are allowed. Sites with disabled WP-Cron should configure a real server cron for wp-cron.php.

Admin app source files

OctoPress includes compiled admin JavaScript and CSS in assets/admin/dist. The human-readable admin app source is included in assets/admin/src, with build configuration in package.json, package-lock.json, vite.config.ts, and tsconfig.json.

Optional External Services

OctoPress does not contact AI providers automatically. A provider is contacted only after an administrator selects and configures that provider, then uses model sync, chat, or an AI-assisted workflow with that provider.

Depending on the action, data sent to the configured provider may include prompts, chat messages, selected WordPress content, tool context, model names, provider metadata, and generated responses.

Built-in provider presets include:

  • OpenAI / ChatGPT: Terms https://openai.com/policies/row-terms-of-use/ – Privacy https://openai.com/policies/row-privacy-policy/
  • xAI / Grok: Terms https://x.ai/legal/terms-of-service – Privacy https://x.ai/legal/privacy-policy
  • Anthropic: Terms https://www.anthropic.com/legal/commercial-terms – Privacy https://www.anthropic.com/legal/privacy
  • DeepSeek: Terms https://cdn.deepseek.com/policies/en-US/deepseek-open-platform-terms-of-service.html – Privacy https://cdn.deepseek.com/policies/en-US/deepseek-privacy-policy.html
  • OpenRouter: Terms https://openrouter.ai/terms – Privacy https://openrouter.ai/privacy
  • OpenCode Go: Terms https://opencode.ai/legal/terms-of-service – Privacy https://opencode.ai/legal/privacy-policy
  • ZAI / ZAI Coding Plan: Terms https://docs.z.ai/legal-agreement/terms-of-use – Privacy https://docs.z.ai/legal-agreement/privacy-policy

OctoPress also supports custom provider endpoints. If you configure a custom provider, review that provider’s terms, privacy policy, and data handling practices before connecting it.

FAQ

Does OctoPress include an AI model?

No. OctoPress is a workspace that connects WordPress to the AI account, API provider, or compatible endpoint you choose. You pay your provider directly, or use an existing subscription where the provider allows it.

Can I use my existing AI subscription?

Yes, when the provider supports it. ChatGPT and eligible Grok subscriptions can sign in without an API key. Anthropic and the other API providers need an API key from the provider’s dashboard; a Claude.ai chat subscription can’t be used. API-key providers use their own account, billing, and usage rules.

Which providers and models are supported?

OctoPress supports ChatGPT and Grok sign-in, API keys for OpenAI, xAI, Anthropic (API only), DeepSeek, OpenRouter, OpenCode Go, and Z.AI (including the ZAI Coding Plan), plus any compatible custom endpoint. The setup wizard includes presets for each, and you can sync the model list and enable only the models you want. Models that support tool calling work best.

Will OctoPress change my site without asking?

No. Write actions go through enabled tools and permission checks, and they pause for your approval unless you configure a chat to approve selected actions automatically. Each approval shows the tool and the fields it will change.

How much will it cost me?

OctoPress itself is free. AI usage is billed, or limited, by the provider you connect, according to that provider’s pricing or subscription terms. The usage panel on the context ring shows input, output, reasoning, and cached tokens for each chat so you can see what a conversation uses. Anthropic prompt caching is applied automatically and can reduce the cost of repeated input, but savings depend on your provider and how you use it.

What data is stored in WordPress?

OctoPress stores provider configuration, encrypted provider secrets, chats, messages, settings, agent profiles, tool settings, skill settings, and extension settings in your WordPress database.

Are API keys exposed to browser users?

No. Provider secrets are stored server-side and are not returned in normal browser-facing REST responses.

Can OctoPress update WordPress content?

Yes, but only through enabled tools and permissions. Content-writing workflows are designed around drafts or explicit user-approved updates. Approval-gated actions require confirmation unless you configure that chat to approve selected actions automatically.

Can I control who can use which tools?

Yes. In Settings > Tools you can enable or disable each tool and set the minimum WordPress role allowed to run it.

Can I use images in chat?

Yes, when the selected model supports image input. OctoPress supports PNG, JPEG, WebP, and GIF image attachments, lets you preview and reuse chat images, and can save selected chat images to the WordPress Media Library.

What happens if a chat run fails?

OctoPress can retry the latest failed turn without duplicating your original message. The retry uses your current provider, model, and agent selection, so you can adjust those settings before trying again.

Does OctoPress work with WooCommerce?

OctoPress can expose native WooCommerce abilities as tools when WooCommerce is active and those abilities are available on the site. They go through the same tool settings and approval system as every other tool.

Can I customize the workspace appearance?

Yes. Settings > Appearance lets you choose light, dark, or system mode, accent colors, spacing, corners, and fonts. These preferences are personal to your WordPress account and do not change your site’s theme.

Does OctoPress work without a provider?

You can activate the plugin and open onboarding, but chat workflows require at least one configured provider with an enabled model.

Does OctoPress run on cPanel hosting?

Yes, when the hosting account allows normal WordPress loopback requests to the same site. The free plugin does not require shell or process execution. If a host blocks loopback requests or disables WP-Cron without a replacement cron job, long-running chats may not continue reliably.

Where can I get support?

Use the WordPress.org support forum for the free OctoPress plugin.
